Happy Valentine's Day to Yourself

Picture credit Susan at Optimistic Voices.

I am copying a picture and a poem from a great blog that I follow, Optimistic Voices.

Please visit it at http://optimisticvoices.blogspot.com/

Susan does not have MS. She is a what I call "a real person" (LOL!) Her blog is my MS-free zone. Each blog post includes music, poetry, a beautiful picture, and I find it to be a spiritual oasis. I share her beauty with you on Valentine's Day.

POEM: Love after Love by Derek Walcott

The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

  1. Wow, Joan...that poem is hard hitting and inspiring! Thanks for posting it as well as the picture.

And Happy VD to you, too.

  2. I agree. Our primary intimate relationship should always be with ourselves, because we're traveling only with ourselves from the cradle to the grave. No outside people can really break that sacred bond.

  4. Hey, Joan ~

Thanks so much for sharing, and following, my blog - I am honored... and will be checking yours on a regular basis as well... :-)

Jen, your comment reminds me of Joni's song lyric from Hejira: "No one can tell you everything, we all come and go unknown, so deep and superficial, from the forceps to the stone" - nice...
